Area: Sarina
Published: July 5, 2017 - Consultation has concluded - Current Project
The purpose of this project is to develop a revitalisation strategy for the Sarina town centre that draws on previous work undertaken and significant community involvement, to deliver a modernised masterplan for the centre. The strategy will aim to ensure that the Sarina town centre is maintained and strengthened as the major activity centre for southern areas of the region and is a distinctive, diverse, attractive and sustainable urban environment.
The strategy will be based on concept plans which are developed in collaboration with the community. The concepts preferred by the community will then be transformed into a masterplan which can be costed and staged for construction in the near future. A primary aim of the project is to have a shovel-ready project ready for delivery when funding from other levels of government becomes available.
The Sarina community can help create a vibrant, economically viable and pedestrian friendly centre and facilitate development. Some examples of how this was achieved at similar sized highway centres include Home Hill, Ayr, Childers, Gin Gin, Ingham and Cardwell.
Community participation includes a number of targeted workshops, design competition with the Sarina schools, feedback and commentary from this page, consultation events including the Sarina Markets, Sarina Show and Sarina Beach Coconut Festival. So, drop us a line, put your comments in "Street Talk" or come and visit our stand at the above events.
Your participation, feedback and ideas will help shape the Broad Street of the future

Suggestions for the Sarina Business Area.
These ideas are based on “what works” in Childers.
(1) Relocate the fuel outlet further north, giving it more room and keeping it on the same side of the road servicing north bound traffic. This would relieve traffic congestion in the centre of town (ie caravans entering and leaving)
(2) The vacant land left from the fuel outlet would be converted into a park to include the cenotaph and public toilets. With the relocation of the cenotaph this would allow the Anzac Day parade and service to happen without interacting with highway traffic and using Alfred Lane
(3) The removal of the centre island to provide a dedicated highway lane (north and south) with the inclusion of a local traffic lane (north and south along the shop fronts) Parking bays would be designed to include caravans. The highway lane would have pedestrian crossings and the local traffic lane would “give way” to pedestrians. This would shorten the length of the pedestrian crossing, along with coordinated traffic lights, have the effect of keeping the highway traffic flowing. It would also “self regulate” traffic speed.

Could the old air raid shelter be recognised for the significant building that it was and perhaps restored and opened up to the public where people can experience what it was like during the war years waiting for those sirens to sound. It could be a major drawcard for people to visit Sarina as not many of these shelters still exist. Most locals don't know what it is either apart from just being a storage shed for council.

Expand the bus lane outside the primary school and put up a safety fence between the bus lane and the road to prevent any students or community members from accessing the road in this area

I'd rather see safe footpaths throughout the Sarina residential areas than cosmetic facelift for the town centre. Especially from Apex park on the south side leading upto Charles Taylor St and including Goonyella Ave and Sichter StreetThe park is accessed by dozens of local children who because of no footpath walk in the middle of the road, I have also seen a local senior resident in a wheelchair also having to travel along the roadway. the is a tragedy waiting to happen.

Having a business in the centre of Sarina has given me the opportunity to speak to a lot of tourists lately. The major topic that has come to light is parking for caravans. We know about the field of dreams but many who haven't been here before don't And if they miss it they will keep going and they have told me that they would also bypass Mackay as they don't want to tow a caravan into a city What they have suggested is large signage south of Sarina a couple of times a Klm or 2 apart with instructions or notice about the field of dream parking. Hope this is understandable also signs erected from the north as well. Next make the owners of the eyesaw next to mitre 10 erect a fence that totally blocks that project. It is starting to be an embarrassment Lastly our footpaths are in need of attention Outside the BP I have never been able to get down the street without getting my shoes totally soaked their is no were to go except onto the road or through the BP has been like this for as long as I can remember I believe the first suggestion about signage would be cost effective Cheers Barb

Quite a few towns use their Showgrounds as cheap 48/72hr stopovers for travellers who do not want to access the regular caravan parks. This encourages people to stay longer, spend their money in the town (not just to benefit the park owner) and unhitch and explore the local areas. Another thought is to revive the ex-skatepark area behind the council buildings and make this an off-highway parking area for travellers as it is easy walking to shops etc.

exercise equipment at the parks, walking paths and bicycle paths out to the beaches and around town, service providers and community gardens. freshen up the streets and create a tourist/caravan friendly town. Free camping near the beaches which will attract the tourist to Sarina Cane crossing in Central street and Anzac street is horrible and unsafe, need updating.

Some people like the toad and some don't so you could put some big stalks of cane behind the toad and an explanation on a plaque as to why the toad was introduced into our country in the first place

When travellers come to a town, they need somewhere to park up within walking distance of shops; a covered table (not old concrete or covered in bird crap), taps and toilets. This would be best done near the information centre although there is limited parking that would only fit 3 rigs at any one time. The number of public toilets in this area need to be increased. The map of Sarina and its facilities needs to be updated. Travellers need to know where to find RACQ, mechanics, auto-electricians and hardware as well as chemists, Drs and supermarkets. The public toilets near the council office are not really convenient for travellers pulling a caravan. Does the "bomb shelter/storage shed" in the middle of Broad Street opposite the primary school need to remain? Many travellers stop to use the free wifi at the library, but the gutter outside the library is lumpy and dangerous. Does Sarina have an obesity problem? Some sort of posted walking trail listing dates of settlement, mill opening, historic advances etc would be good.

A safe swimming hole (possibly netted and enclosed), could be located at Plane Creek behind the Leagues Club. Similar to what's being revitalised at Platypus Beach. Picnic Tables, BBQ's and signs directing visitors / tourists.

When you arrive in the centre of Sarina, tourists and locals need to feel as though they have been transported to a tropical haven. We need lots of greenery including large permanent pots on the edge of the footpaths, filled with palms and tropical plants. We need an abundance of hanging plants in front of our businesses. Outdoor eating areas and merchandise displays on the footpaths help to encourage tourists to stop and take a look. There is a huge number of residents in the Mackay Region who rarely come down to Sarina for a drive. We need to entice these people to come down as well. The middle of our town currently looks tired and in need of a face lift. Hanging on to the past and what it looked like when we were kids is not the answer. I am sure there will be a lot of pain before a lot of gain, as some businesses are bound to be inconvenienced during the restructure. To do nothing is not an option, or we will be left behind. The new Tourist Information Centre should be the stimulus for Sarina to reinvent itself into a vibrant, green space, that is family and tourist friendly.

How about adding covers over the tables, fixing the roads that need repair and adding bbq's to eating areas. It is a unique place and it should not be done up like mackay was. Mackay cbd was a waste of money and should not be repeated in sarina. Fix stuff that needs repairing and leave good stuff be.

Hi. I am really concerned about the lights from the state school. The button to press is so close to the road, tgere is always loads if kids racing down the path to press it and the trucks rattle past only a couple of feet away. It's an accident waiting to happen. The button needs to be moved back away from the danger, or an iverpass/walk way put in. Also the intersection of east st/central/ briadsound needs a round about. I know thus is not what you want to hear or can do anything about, I just think the council needs to be made aware of it. It really scares me that there will be a tragic accident. We don't need a sculpture or artwork, we have buddy and the sugar shed. The athletics field and equipment needs an overhaul.

I think a playground in the centre of town would be a wonderful addition (the others are a little out of the way). I think it would also be worth considering what Childers has done with their two lanes of traffic. One is used to go through town safely and the other is used for local traffic to have access to parks and shops more safely.
