ANZAC Day 2020

Preparations are now under way for the 2020 Anzac Day parade. These parades are a long standing community tradition.

It provides an opportunity for schools and the community to participate in the ANZAC Day events occurring throughout the Mackay region.

Every year we aim to make the parade safer for all involved while maintaining the special traditions of the day. This year, as a result of feedback and observations, changes have been made to enhance the parade experience.

It is important that you are aware of the following changes:

  • Rather than march in the parade, daycare and kindergarten students will assemble to create a guard of honour as a mark of respect to war veterans marching past the dais. For the guard of honour, daycare and kindergarten students are invited to assemble in the Artspace car park.
  • Flag bearers and school leaders are also invited to break off before the corner of Gordon and Wellington streets to join the guard of honour.
  • Due to the lack of use, a bus service from Canelands Shopping Centre to the main assembly area on the corner of River and Gregory Streets will not continue this year.

Things that remain the same:

  • Students are asked to assemble in the Dome carpark and adjacent Gregory Street- map of assembly area will be provided soon.
  • The march will commence at Gregory Street (behind vintage cars and other vehicles) to Alfred Street via Gordon and Wellington streets.
  • Veterans, Navy, Army and Airforce Cadets and youth groups (scouts and girl guides etc) will assemble in Victoria Street between Gregory and Wood Streets.
  • After the march, students will be positioned on Alfred Street, Nelson Street (between Alfred and Shakespeare streets) and on Mackay Central State School grounds. Dispersal will be similar to last year’s Anzac Day parade conclusion.

Additional information and maps are located under the Documents tab on this page.

Your participation in this ceremony helps to make it a special community event in honour of those who have served their country. Council thanks everyone for their participation.
