Project update: June 13, 2025 - Council is pleased to announce that contractor Fressinet Australia have completed the essential maintenance works on Cattle Creek Bridge (Owens Creek Loop Road) and the bridge is reopened to motorists in time for the Show weekend.

This mean the Finch Hatton Gorge and Owens Creek Loop Road detours are no longer in place.

Council would like to thank everyone for their patience during these essential works. These works will extend the life of the bridge.


Mackay Regional Council wishes to advise that contractor Fressinet Australia is undertaking maintenance works on our behalf. The works will occur at Cattle Creek Bridge (Owens Creek Loop Road), Finch Hatton. These essential works will extend the life of the bridge.

The works will be delivered in four stages, with stage one beginning Monday, January 6, 2025, weather permitting. The project is expected to be completed early-July, 2025. The hours of work will be Monday to Saturday, 6.30am to 5pm, with no works on public holidays.

Traffic disruptions:

  • Stage 1 – Intermittent traffic control will be in place from Monday, January 6, 2025, to Friday, February 14, 2025, weather permitting. On occasion, delays up to five minutes are expected.
  • Stage 2 – Intermittent traffic control will be in place from Monday, February 24, 2025, to Monday, May 5, 2025 weather permitting. On occasion, delays up to five minutes are expected.
  • Stage 3 – A full road closure on Cattle Creek (Higham) Bridge with detours in place from Tuesday, May 6 to Friday, June 13, 2025, weather permitting. The additional travel time to and from Finch Hatton Gorge via the detour is about 15 minutes and the detour going to and from Owen Creek Loop Road is about 20 minutes.   • Stage 4 – Intermittent traffic control will be in place on Cattle Creek (Higham) Bridge from Friday, June 20 to Tuesday, July 1, 2025, weather permitting. On occasion, delays up to five minutes are expected.

There will be some noise and dust disturbances with various plant and equipment on site.
