Have your say on the draft Environmental Sustainability Strategy

The Mackay region has a unique natural environment, vibrant economy and culturally diverse community that supports the lifestyle we enjoy today. Sustainability is about meeting our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2026-2031 builds on previous sustainability initiatives and sets the pathway for environmental sustainability in the next five years. The strategy focuses primarily on council’s own actions in operations, planning, infrastructure and services, but also recognises the importance of partnerships to achieve a more sustainable, liveable and resilient region.

The strategy introduces five strategic pillars guiding council’s priorities for the next five years. This means embedding sustainability into decision-making, protecting our natural environment, improving climate adaptation and resilience, reducing carbon emissions, responsible use of resources and partnerships with community to achieve a sustainable region.

The strategy demonstrates council’s commitment to environmental sustainability, natural environment stewardship and supporting sustainable practices in the community. The strategy will be implemented on an annual basis with the delivery of key initiatives and an internal action plan to monitor progress.

Feedback is invited from residents, businesses, community groups and other stakeholders.The strategy is practical, locally relevant and reflects shared aspirations for the Mackay region. All survey responses received during the consultation period will be considered in finalising the strategy.
