Project update: Community consultation outcome

Council has reviewed the results of the recent community consultation held from May to June, 2025, regarding a potential shift from undivided to divided representation.

While 87% of survey respondents expressed support for introducing electoral divisions, the overall participation was low - only 834 responses in a local government area with over 90,000 registered voters and 121,000 residents. This equates to less than 0.7% of the population.

Given these limitations, council has determined that the level of engagement does not reflect a significant portion of the community. As a result, no further action will be taken on this matter at this time.

Mackay Regional Council is seeking community input on the idea of reverting to electoral divisions.

Mackay Regional Council currently has an undivided council – 10 Councillors and a Mayor – representing the entire local government area.

At the March ordinary meeting of council, a resolution was carried to undertake a preliminary, low-cost consultation process to assess community sentiment on the idea of having a divided council.

In a divided council, Councillors are elected to represent divisions.

This survey is open to Mackay Regional Council residents only.

The survey will be live on council’s Connecting Mackay website from 9am, Sunday, May 4, 2025, until 11.59pm Sunday, June 1, 2025.

Please view further information about the electoral divisions here.

After the survey has concluded, council will review the result and the amount of community interest and decide whether to progress to a formal review involving the State Government.
