Strategy Background

The Mackay region is home to a diverse range of sporting, community, cultural, business and tourism leisure events which all contribute to the economic and social well-being of the region and community.

Events generate awareness for regional destinations and drive visitation, attract investment, foster trade, business and export, generate employment and offer much-needed income in shoulder and low seasons.

In recent years, the Mackay region has increased its focus on events with strategic alignment to both local and state tourism strategies. With the recent expiration of the 2015-2018 Regional Events Strategy, it is now time to prepare the 2020- 2025 Mackay Region Events Strategy.

Mackay Regional Council is a proud supporter of attracting events and conferences to our region and recognises the role of events in building social capital, encouraging community participation and enhancing tourism opportunities. Council introduced the Invest Mackay Events Attraction and Conference Attraction Program (the Program) as part of the 2015/16 budget. The Program aims to support the attraction of major sporting events, concerts and conferences to stimulate the local economy and since 2015 Council has invested $4.8 million.

Council has recently undertaken a tender process for the development of a 5 Year Mackay Region Event Strategy (2020 – 2025).

The purpose of the Strategy is to provide a strategic direction and focus for the acquisition and support of events in the Mackay Region; and to develop a framework to guide the Mackay region to increased economic prosperity through events.

Mackay Regional Council has appointed Luminair as the consultant to develop this strategy. Luminair is as an industry leading consultancy, that specialises in the government strategy (with a specific focus on event strategies, optimisation of event portfolios, community and economic development). Luminair have completed similar event strategies in the City of Logan, Brisbane City, Tweed Shire, Cairns and Moreton Bay.

Council has been working with a large range of key stakeholders from the tourism and event sectors, such as event organisers, sports associations and groups, venues and facilities, government agencies and State and Local tourism agencies to develop the framework to guide the Mackay region to increased economic prosperity through events for the next five years.

We need to ensure all avenues have been addressed. If you have expertise you would like to contribute and can add-value to our region’s strategic direction, we'd like your input.
