Milton and George streets intersection upgrade

Mackay Regional Council is installing traffic lights at the intersection of Milton and George streets to improve the safety of all road users.
As part of the intersection upgrade, additional works includes:
- Drainage improvements in the nearby park
- New short-term parking (drop-off zone) in Evan Street opposite Mackay State High School
- New footpath on the western side of Milton Street from Evan to George streets
This $1,428,960 project is funded by the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program and will be constructed in five stages.
Residents are advised of possible noise, dust and traffic disturbances associated with the project. Appropriate controls will be in place to minimise any impact.
While drainage works in the park occur, the park will have some restricted access from January 6, 2020.
When completing stages 3 and 4, George Street will be temporarily closed to local traffic only at the Milton Street intersection in two consecutive stages. The roundabout and traffic islands will be removed at night in the final stage.
Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these necessary works and ask that you obey signs and directions from traffic control to ensure the safety of all users.

PROJECT UPDATE: Wednesday, February 12, 2020
The project is currently ahead of schedule with stage four now complete.
Western George Street is now open and the detour from George Street to Howard Street has been lifted.
Ongoing drainage works are being carried out in Kemmis Park and the skate park remains operational. Works continue on the Milton Street footpath, from Evan to George streets, which has been delayed due to construction issues.
The short-term parking across from Mackay State High School is now usable. Council advises motorists to be cautious as line marking is not yet complete.
The removal of the Milton Street traffic island has been completed. The removal of the roundabout is expected to occur towards the end of March during night works to minimise the impact on motorists.

PROJECT UPDATE: Thursday, January 16, 2020
Full road closure will be implemented on George Street between Milton and Field streets from Monday, January 20. This section of road will be closed for approximately five weeks, weather permitting, and only accessible by local traffic. (Please see the local access map below.)
This stage of the project involves road works on the western side of the intersection (about 50 metres) from Milton Street along George Street. Traffic lights will also be installed.
This project is currently three weeks ahead of schedule. The eastern-side of the George Street intersection is expected to reopen this Monday (January 20).

PROJECT UPDATE: - Friday, January 10, 2020
Full road closure will be implemented on George Street between Milton and James streets from Monday, January 13. This section of road will be closed for approximately three weeks, weather permitting, and only accessible by local traffic. (Please see the local access map below.)This stage of the project involves road works on the eastern side of the intersection for 20 metres from Milton Street along George Street. Traffic lights will also be installed.
