North Mackay Rotary Lookout

The view from this platform is fantastic.
Area: North Mackay
Published: September 4, 2017 - Consultation has concluded - Current Project

Construction has begun on this project and is expected to be completed by late May 2020, weather permitting.

From the extensive engagement conducted, antisocial behaviour; traffic; enhanced amenities; all-abilities access; and a general improvement to this landmark are the most important areas of concern you indicated.

Common requests included CCTV and enhanced lighting, improved parking and installing traffic-calming devices.

While further investigations are needed to ensure suitability and, in the case of the cameras, that they meet privacy regulations, other aspects of these suggestions are out of scope for this project.

Some of the suggestions, however, may be addressed as funding becomes available, such as parking issues, and council may make a separate undertaking to address the islands on Pollock St and installing traffic-calming devices.

You encouraged some exciting ideas to enhance the Lookout with an Indigenous bushfood garden, while others made suggestions for fitness and recreational use.

And speaking of fitness, the existing staircase will be replaced with a better design that meets standards, and shade and seating has been incorporated into the masterplan.

Drinking facilities have also been factored in, with barbecues and tables proposed for future works.

All-abilities access has also been considered and while a chairlift is not in the scope of works, there will be wheelchair access from a vehicle drop-off point at the top of Pollock Street to the Lookout.

There is no plan to develop wheelchair access between High and Pollock Streets.
