Mackay Regional Council (MRC) in partnership with Resources Industry Network (RIN) and the Queensland Government is building a Resources Centre of Excellence, which will facilitate mining industry research, training and collaboration in the region.

Mackay Regional Council is managing the delivery of the Resources Centre of Excellence on council-owned land at Crichtons Road, Paget, with the facility to be operated by the Resource Industry Network once complete.

The centre will be used by training providers, researchers, and private companies within the METS sector.

The Resources Centre of Excellence comprises of two key components:
1. An Underground Mining Simulated Training Facility (UMSTF);
2. An integrated approach to bringing together the various resources related training and research facilities and services currently available in the region.

Mackay construction company Fergus Builders has been awarded a contract to build the Resources Centre of Excellence. The contract includes construction of an administration building, workshop, laboratory, landscaping and utilities and sets it up for the next stage, which will include fit-out of an underground mining simulator.

Contractors will be onsite to begin construction on September 30, 2019 with completion expected in June of 2020, weather permitting.

The project is supported by the Queensland Government's $175 million Jobs and Regional Growth Fund that is assisting big-thinking, job-creating projects across regional Queensland.
