Community feedback helps shape Slade Point off-leash park
Council has today (July 16) supported a community request for a fully fenced off-leash dog park in Slade Point.
The idea was initially raised by the Slade Point community via a petition in October 2024, with council holding two community consultation sessions.
Through that process, the community identified an alternative option, which has today been supported by council.
The fully fenced facility will be located in the Wren Street Oval, adjacent to the community hall.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the result is a great example of council responding to community feedback.
“Through the consultation, the community was able to identify an option that better suited their needs, with an overwhelming majority of respondents supporting the park being near the community hall,” Mayor Williamson said.
“We also listened to feedback that the community felt strongly about the park not being located at the beach, Lamberts Lookout or Cumberland Park near residential properties,” he said.
“It’s a wonderful example of democracy in action – of people bringing an issue to council and our teams working with the community to deliver the best outcome.”
Mayor Williamson said the park will provide segregated areas for large and small dogs.
President of the Slade Point Progress Association, Vanessa Cooley, said it was a very pleasing outcome for the community.
“It was a suggestion raised by the community early on, so it’s lovely to see that input reflected in the outcome,” Ms Cooley said.
“It’s a great example of a win-win; by utilising some of the existing infrastructure will hopefully mean less outlay for council while still delivering on what locals were asking for,” she said.
Ms Cooley said the outcome shows what could happen when the community and council worked together and community voices were welcomed and considered.
Mayor Greg Williamson said the development of an off-leash dog park in Slade Point was aligned with council’s vision of providing accessible spaces where residents and visitors could live, visit and play.
“This project will provide a much-needed space for dog owners in Slade Point, allowing them to exercise their pets off-leash within a safe and controlled environment,” Mayor Williamson said.
The plan for this project includes installing basic infrastructure, including a picnic shelter with seating, water connection, bins and signage.
