Mackay Regional Council are installing a new water main in Sydney Street between River and Shakespeare streets.

The water main is being installed along the eastern side of Sydney Street, it will result in a reduced risk of failure and increased water supply reliability for the local network.

The project is being completed by Roebuck Civil, on behalf of council with construction starting at the Shakespeare Street end, with works progressing towards River Street.

Details for the project include:

  • The project will be delivered in seven stages under nightworks (these stages are listed below)
  • Traffic control will be in place for the duration of the project
  • Traffic will be reduced to single lane while works occur at night
  • Intersection stages will require the temporary closure of some lanes each night with detours in place
  • All traffic lanes will be restored to normal traffic arrangements each morning
  • On-street parking will be temporarily unavailable in some areas for the works
  • Driveway access will be restored each morning
  • Water interruptions will occur during the project, advance notice will be provided to directly affected

The indicative stages are listed below and are subject to change. A maximum of two stages will be open at one time, works are to be completed on each stage prior to beginning another stage.

Stage 1 – Shakespeare Street to Alfred Street – completed, except for line marking

Stage 2 – Alfred Street to Gordon Street completed, except for line marking

Stage 3 – Gordon and Sydney streets intersection – mid-July 2022

Stage 4 – Gordon Street to Victoria Street – completed, except for line marking

Stage 5 – Victoria and Sydney streets intersection – June 2022

Stage 6 – Victoria Street to River Street – completed, except for line marking

Stage 7 – Shakespeare and Sydney streets intersection – July 2022

Due to the water main being located predominantly in the parking lane, on-street parking will be unavailable at certain times. These areas will be barricaded off when they are not available.

There will be some driveway interruptions for laneways, however businesses will be contacted by Roebucks community liaison manager Donnah Jordan prior to works happening to discuss access requirements.

Water interruptions will occur during the project, advance notice will be given prior to these interruptions occurring.

Traffic control will be in place, please follow all signage and instructions. Some minor noise and dust disruptions are expected due to the various plant and equipment on site, however appropriate controls will be put in place to minimise impact.

Council is appreciative of your patience and apologises for any inconvenience caused during these works.

Should you have any questions, please contact Roebuck Civils’ community engagement manager Donnah Jordan on 0401 881 125 or council’s community engagement officer Rebecca McDermott on 1300 MACKAY (622 529)
