More street trees coming!

Council is continuing its street tree planting program in 2026.

New street trees will be planted in Explore Estate in Rural View from February.

Street trees make a significant contribution to improving the amenity of urban areas, making them more walkable, assisting with urban cooling (reducing the temperature of the shaded area as much as 10 to 25 degrees Celsius) and supporting local biodiversity through providing habitat, food source and connectivity for wildlife.

Studies to develop council's Mackay Urban Greening Strategy have found that Mackay has lost a significant number of trees from residential and industrial areas. As of 2021, only 14 per cent of urban areas are covered by tree canopy, which is low compared to other local government areas nationally.

These tree plantings will ensure that we continue to contribute to maintaining a healthy urban tree scape across the region and continue to provide benefits of urban trees for our community into the future.

If you think your street tree requires pruning or maintenance, please contact council on 1300 MACKAY (622 529) or visit Mackay Regional Council - Customer requests to place a request for an arborist to assess your tree.

Should you have any questions about this project, please contact council's Community Engagement Team on 1300 MACKAY (622 529) or email engagement@mackay.qld.gov.au.
