About the project
Council is developing a Master Plan for John Breen Park and Centenary Place in North Mackay to guide the park’s renewal over the next 20 years to meet the recreational needs of the surrounding community.
The park is an essential community asset and we are keen to strengthen its role within the network of open space along Goosepond Creek while protecting the area’s natural character.
The Master Plan will include recommendations to inform any future open space and infrastructure upgrades and identify potential new uses that will ensure it remains a valued community asset.
About the park
John Breen Park and Centenary Place is an 11-hectare recreational park that currently includes:
Three (3) designated carparks.
Children’s playground with separate junior and senior play areas (not fully fenced).
Outdoor exercise gym.
Fenced dog park that was formally named the Police Dog Tunza off leash dog park.
Cricket oval.
Skate park.
Disused roller hockey rink.
Nine (9) hole disc golf course.
Barbecue and picnic facilities.
Public toilets.
We recognise that the park is highly valued by the community and is used for a wide range of recreational activities, making it an important destination in the North Mackay area.

Council is committed to genuine consultation with the community to ensure that the Master Plan responds to the needs and aspirations of the community.
Along with targeted consultation with internal council stakeholders and external community groups, the wider community can have their say by:
Attending our pop-up in the park on Saturday, August 15 anytime between 2pm and 5pm.
Telling us what you enjoy about the park, how you use it and what could be improved on the online ideas wall.
Consultation is open from 9am on Monday, August 10 to 11.59pm on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
