Local contractor Pentacon has been awarded the tender to upgrade and extend the existing Pioneer River Training Wall Levee along the southern extents of the Pioneer River.
The levee wall is being extended to increase flood protection in the West Mackay area.
The works will include a new 3150m2 levee wall, stormwater upgrades, road reconstruction and revegetation works.
The new levee wall will:
Extend along Nebo Road near the Ron Camm Bridge approach and go behind Shakespeare Street businesses and front Holland Street, the Mackay Cemetery and Hume Street and connect to the existing earth levee wall.
Be built within the existing road reserve.
Be constructed out of masonry block.
Be approximately one metre tall (around the Mackay Cemetery) and approximately two metres tall (close to the Ron Camm Bridge approach).
Have flood gates on Hume Street and the Ron Camm Bridge approaches and be operational only when a flood is imminent.
Have landscape plantings at specific points along the wall to visually buffer the wall.
The works are expected to commence in mid-June and be completed by December 2026, weather permitting.
The works will be completed in stages to reduce impacts to surrounding residents and businesses.
Stage 1 – Hume Street and 2B Hume Street Stage 6 – Gordon Street, Memorial Pool
Stage 2 – Hume Street and Cemetery Road
Stage 3 – Cemetery Road and Holand Street
Stage 4 – Holland Street and Shakespeare Street
Stage 5 – Nebo Road
Prior to work commencing on each stage, surrounding property owners and businesses will be notified about the works.
The Mackay Cemetery will remain open during the works and property access will be maintained to surrounding residents and businesses.
