Camilleri Street District Park set to receive accessibility upgrades from Stage 3 of the Master Plan!

Vassallo Constructions has been awarded the tender to complete Camilleri Street District Park’s pathway upgrades. The upgrades are based on the Master Plan which was finalised after extensive community consultation between 2017-2018.

Stages one and two of the park were constructed in 2019 and included a Youth Hub, fully fenced dog park, public toilets, connecting footpaths and a picnic node.

    Upcoming construction will include:

Skate park to open this weekend

Stage one of the park upgrade at Camilleri Street District Park, which includes the skate park and pump track, will be opened to the public from this Saturday (November 9).

The project is jointly funded between Mackay Regional Council and the Queensland Government who helped fund the project through a $1 million election commitment.

Cr Ross Gee said there was plenty of anticipation surrounding the project, particularly the youth hub, which featured a skate park, pump track, half basketball court and hit-up wall.

“Construction of the youth hub has been ongoing since July,” he said.

“Contractors, Convic Pty Ltd, have done an exceptional job, completing this project in record time and we are pleased that we can open it to the public this weekend.

While the youth hub is now complete, work on the revitalisation of Camilleri Street District Park is ongoing and will be officially opened in December.

In addition to the youth hub, the upgrades include:

    • New public amenities
    • Boardwalk and footpath connectivity from Barber Drive to Camilleri Street car park
    • Additional shelters, an electric barbecue, picnic tables and bench seats
    • Water bubbler and rubbish bins
    • Dog park

Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert MP, who helped turn a sod on-site earlier this year to mark the start of construction, said it was exciting to see the project take shape.

“The State Government is proud to have helped fund this job-creating project, which is creating wonderful facilities to enhance the liveability for Northern Beaches residents and visitors to the area,’’ she said.

Cr Ayril Paton said the upgrades would help meet the needs of the growing Northern Beaches population.

“With about 1080 families living in the area, there is strong demand for improved recreational facilities in the Northern Beaches,” he said.

“This project will build on existing infrastructure, while catering to a wider range of ages and providing a space for residents to enjoy leisure and social activities in the Northern Beaches.”

Camilleri Street Park development enters next stages

Camilleri Street District Park at Blacks Beach has been a hive of activity over the last two months.

In July, council contractors Convic Pty Ltd started work on the youth hub, which features a skate park and pump track, a half basketball court and a hit-up wall.

Cr Ayril Paton said the facility was starting to take shape and there was plenty of excitement surrounding the development.

“Convic are the contractors responsible for the popular Sugar Bowl Mackay wheeled sports facility in North Mackay,” he said.

“The Northern Beaches skate park will offer a completely different experience to the Sugar Bowl, with more opportunities for grinding and street runs, as well as a long, winding pump circuit suitable for bikes, skateboards and scooters.”

Council is now looking forward to progressing with Stage 1b and Stage 2.

This involves installation of a boardwalk and footpaths to improve connectivity from Barber Drive to Camilleri Street car park, a toilet block, additional picnic shelters, drinking fountains, drainage and a fenced dog park.

Fergus Builders Pty Ltd was awarded the tender for both stages at today’s (August 14) council meeting.

Cr Paton said Fergus Builders represented the best value for money for this project.

“We are looking forward to delivering this project in the Northern Beaches,” he said.

“There is strong demand for improved recreational facilities like this in the Northern Beaches due to the growing residential population in this area.”

This project is expected to be completed by November this year, weather permitting.

This project is jointly funded by the Queensland Government and Mackay Regional Council.

Northern Beaches skate park in planning stages

The wheels are in motion for the development of a new skate park in the Northern Beaches.

The skate park is part of bigger project to create a new district level park in Blacks Beach by upgrading the existing Camilleri Street Park and adjoining Crown Reserve.

The plan is to build on the park’s existing infrastructure including its paths, playground and picnic area, and provide additional facilities like public toilets, BBQs and the new skate park.

Community consultation is now open regarding the upgrade of the existing recreational area and Crown Reserve on Camilleri Street.

Economic Development and Planning Committee chair Cr Amanda Camm said the Northern Beaches were a popular residential area for families but currently lacked the necessary recreational infrastructure.

“While there are playgrounds in the area that cater to younger children, teens often have to rely on their parents to transport them to activities and parks more suited to their age group,” she said.

“Providing a contemporary style local skate park in the new Camilleri Street District Park makes a lot of sense.

“The park is already ideally located. The new facilities and skate park will be within walking or riding distance of children and younger teens living in the Eimeo, Blacks Beach and Dolphin Heads areas.”

Council is currently seeking feedback from the community on what they want to see included as part of the park’s upgrade and how local skaters would like to see the new Northern Beaches Skate Park developed.

A community consultation session will be held at Blacks Beach Tavern on Tuesday, November 28.
